The Author
What I Believe
A. Scott is the pen name of an American writer of short stories and fiction. “As Close to the Truth as I Can Get” is the author’s first novel. A former journalist and public relations executive, the author writes about moral dilemmas, life struggles, and roads taken and not taken.
The author believes the written word should express our deepest thoughts and highest aspirations and agrees with Mary Karr who once said, “Writing is painful—it’s ‘fun’ only for novices, the very young, and hacks. Other than a few instances of luck, good work only comes through revision, and the best revisers often have reading habits that stretch back before the current age, which lends them a sense of history and raises their standards for quality.”
Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, A. Scott grew up in South Texas and now resides in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.
"As Close to the Truth as I Can Get"
Joan, a captivating young woman navigating the complexities of the 1940s, confronts adversity when her marriage turns abusive in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Seeking refuge, she flees to Dallas with her three-year-old daughter, where she encounters a dashing Army Air Force captain amidst the backdrop of war, igniting a profound romance. However, her past resurfaces when her husband reappears, adamantly refusing her request for a divorce and nearly succumbing to a self-inflicted stab wound. Struggling with overwhelming guilt, Joan reconciles with him, and they return to New Mexico. Despite her efforts, the cycle of abuse persists, compelling Joan to navigate the challenges of ending her marriage while safeguarding her children and harboring a deeply buried secret. “AS CLOSE TO THE TRUTH AS I CAN GET” chronicles Joan’s resilience in the face of adversity and her unwavering quest for happiness.

This novel is brimming with real passion and mistakes and bravery, told from a time when women had to fight to own the right to love. I read it and tumbled into a time that we all can call our own history. Make it a part of yours and you’ll be a kinder person. Embrace the Power of Books
In a world filled with screens and digital distractions, books remain a timeless portal to new worlds, ideas, and emotions. As an author and avid reader, I’ve always believed in the magic of storytelling. Whether you’re flipping through the pages of a gripping thriller, immersing yourself in a heartfelt romance, or delving into the depths of human nature through literary fiction, books have the unparalleled ability to transport us beyond our everyday lives.

Stranger in a Strange Land
In high school, I was introduced to Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein. If you’ve not read the book, it tells the story of Valentine Michael Smith, a human who comes to Earth in early adulthood after being born on the planet Mars and raised by Martians. Among his people for the first time, he struggles to understand their social mores and prejudices that are so alien to him. Surrounded by people who wish to exploit his unique status, he is taken advantage of for political gain.

As Close to the Truth as I Can Get
The title of my book is taken from something I heard many times growing up. The line was considered an excuse or apology for not telling the truth. ‘As close to the truth’ was an acceptable caveat before anyone gave a misleading statement and outright falsehood.
We all lie to some extent every day.
